![]() It’s the sound of three mature musicians pushing themselves, exploring new parts of their musical identities as relative newcomer Wynne comes into her own she brings a contemporary, at times almost gothic feel to the accomplished songcraft here. Envy Of None is a highly produced, song-centric headphones record, imbued with the crackle of true inspiration. Over those six years, what was originally intended to be a four-track EP grew into an 11-track debut album. This last year’s been pretty much full-on recording and development of the songs, but the project’s been about six years in the making.” We were very excited about her abilities as a vocalist. Her voice is just so captivating and evocative. The project had been casual up to that point, but according to Lifeson: “When Maiah came along it became a little more serious. Curran sent Wynne the song Shadow, they began collaborating on music and lyrics, and she became the new singer with Envy Of None. The pair clicked over their mutual affinity for the darker edges of pop music. The winner that year was 20-year-old, Portland-based Americana artist Maiah Wynne, who won the one-on-one mentorship session with Curran. Then in 2017 Curran’s music-business expertise was offered as part of the prize for a US-wide talent contest called Claim2Fame. Curran and Annibalini had begun writing tunes and producing under the Envy Of None banner, and Curran invited Lifeson – artistically restless after Rush’s swansong tour – to put down his golf clubs and pick up his guitar.Īt the time, the band had a female singer who wasn’t quite cutting it. You can learn more about Envy of None and order their self-titled debut album here. The idea of the two of them collaborating on something creative had never come up, but that changed in the mid-2010s. It was the perfect mood to decompress after all these different textures… a nice way to close the book.” There’s a finality about a sunset that kind of stayed with me throughout the whole process. “I was on his balcony watching the sunset and found inspiration. ![]() “I visited Neil when he was ill,” Alex Lifeson said in a press release. “Western Sunset” was penned by Lifeson in tribute to long-time Rush drummer Neil Peart, who passed away in January of 2020. While most of the album drives and pumps like a conveyor belt, there are moments of soft, sweet respite as evident in tracks like “Old Strings,” the record’s sole ballad, or “Western Sunset,” which concludes the record. Although it might have been nice to hear more lead guitar work, Lifeson’s backseat relationship with the rest of the band serves a different purpose and adds a unique dynamic to the music. In Envy of None, Lifeson’s approach is similar to his approach with Rush in the 80’s, eschewing the limelight in favor of a more complementary role, adding atmospheric layers to the music rather than displaying his prowess at the forefront of the group’s compositions. ![]() Because the album sounds like Lifeson, by default it is impossible to say it doesn’t sound anything like Rush. Lifeson’s presence is undeniably noticeable, and his approach unmistakably unique. The group’s second single, “Look Inside,” a slow, riffy rock ‘n’ roll song that harkens back to the days of Black Sabbath, is perhaps the album’s stand out track and was released with an accompanying music video in early March.Īlthough the album is an obvious departure from Lifeson’s previous work, Rush fans should not be quick to dismiss it. Two of the album’s tracks, “Spy House” and “Kabul Blues,” were previously released as instrumentals on Lifeson’s website before being re-worked with vocals by Wynne for the album. The electronic heavy album is full of catchy, pop-centric rock songs with a dark industrial edge.įans of groups like Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode will enjoy tracks like “Shadow,” “Dumb” and “Liar,” the last of which was released as a single earlier this year. The group delivers a record full of atmosphere that is at times heavy and sexy, and at other times, soft and sweet. The group features Alex Lifeson, best known as guitar player and co-founder of influential prog-titans, Rush, joined by vocalist Maiah Wynne, bassist Andy Curran of Coney Hatch, and producer/engineer Alfio Annibalini. Industrial rockers Envy of None released their self-titled debut album via Kscope Music this morning.
